In ‘Wat doen we met het verdriet’, mourning for family members goes hand in hand with landscape grief, love sickness with the fate of our farmers in the Netherlands and our lost heritage.
Broeder Dieleman has often taken the outskirts of our human existence as a subject, but never before did all themes coincide as they do in this song. The sometimes somewhat sketchy approach from the earlier work has disappeared and has given way to a clear, unmistakable sound, even if you don't speak Zeeuws Flemish.
There is no sweet nostalgia, but there is a palpable grief for everything that disappears from our world. At a time when local identity and nature conservation are important topics, with this song broeder Dieleman articulates something that always lurks beneath the surface of current events.
